The 14th Acampamento Terra Livre (ATL) ended in Brasília on April 28, 2017, after five days of protests and activities involving more than 4,000 Indigenous people from around 200 ethnic groups across Brazil. Organized by the Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (APIB), it became the largest gathering of Indigenous people in the country at the time.

The mobilization denounced police violence, stalled Indigenous land demarcations, weakened Indigenous rights protections, and the Marco Temporal thesis, which sought to restrict land rights to territories occupied by Indigenous communities on October 5, 1988. Participants also highlighted the impacts of mining, logging, cattle ranching, and hydroelectric projects on Indigenous territories and communities.

The gathering strengthened unity within the Indigenous movement, amplified the voices of women and young people, and reinforced the struggle for the recognition and protection of Indigenous peoples’ constitutional rights.
